The Tricolor Dome Series is a series of exhibition installations created to activate underutilized urban public spaces. The design was originally created for Suzhou International Design Week in response to the local urban conditions of the historic Guanqian Commercial Street. Three exhibition installations, titled Zongxing Gong, Blue Sky Bubble and Oasis Gallery, were designed to address site-specific issues such as a lack of shelter, as well as a lack of seating and resting spaces.

Zhongxing Arch was developed from Zhongxingding, an early design of Zhongxing Architecture. It is a movable building used to trigger events and is itself an architectural event. The roof can be retracted, and when folded, it can be used by citizens to ride across the entire city; when unfolded, it can cover the entire street, connect fractured urban public spaces, and create a more active space to stimulate urban public events. The curved arcade shape of the rows of arches also coincides with the winding corridors of Suzhou classical gardens, creating a different garden experience through small and complex space design. At the same time, Zhongxing Gong also emphasizes the importance of arcade space in the history of urban street life.

Blue Sky Bubble is located on the rooftop terrace of Guanqian Street in Suzhou. A group of blue and transparent inflatable bubbles form a light and transparent roof on the terrace. As a set of installations, Blue Sky Bubbles also highlights the effectiveness of China’s air pollution control efforts to have more blue skies, as well as the common goal of continuous control. The terrace space under the roof serves as a place for gatherings, meetings and other activities. It is dotted with different forms of blue custom-made inflatable furniture, providing an interesting rest space where you can sit back and enjoy the surrounding beauty.

The Oasis Gallery is a temporary stage and temporary retreat created in Suzhou’s historic and noisy commercial street. The modular platform and the cross-arch arcades covered with green transparent membranes form a zigzag layout and surround the original six small trees in the square, providing a colorful space that is both open and introverted. In the cloister, light passes through the green film to create a blurry atmosphere, changing the normal look and feel of Suzhou’s street landscape. The Oasis Gallery serves as a venue for performances, gatherings and events, as well as a space for resting under the trees. The design encompasses the existing open-air plaza, creating an attractive and unconventional stage space while forming a new streetscape.
