Housed in the Western Hajj Terminal, the inaugural Islamic Art Biennial brings together and exhibits ancient artifacts and contemporary art from around the world across more than 120,000 square meters of exhibition space.

The exhibition space orchestrates a visit through a series of new galleries, allowing visitors to move through the rooms with a gradual sense of orientation. The space places the exhibits in a journey that gradually emerges from darkness to light: starting in a dimly lit room, viewing a 17th-century astrolabe used to calculate dates, and ending in a brightly lit space to see the first Saudi door of the Ka’bah in Mecca.

Beneath the terminal’s canopy, a new desert landscape guides the “Hijrah journey,” the Prophet Muhammad’s journey from Mecca to Medina. Ramps and sloping walls of varying heights are arranged according to the geometry of the existing building structure, displaying the various artworks and creating a sense of discovery during the visit. Two independent pavilions serve as “reference points” in the open landscape, displaying artifacts from Mecca and Medina. The interior of the pavilions is set in a bright, transparent screen surrounded by walls, which contrasts with the rough atmosphere of the building’s exterior.

In addition, a separate pavilion called “AlMadar / The Orbit” has a separate theme from the Biennale. It displays selected objects from 12 local and international institutions, including exhibits of Islamic art from Kuwait’s “Al Sabah” series and an exhibition paying tribute to the Western Hajj Terminal table to celebrate the terminal’s 40th anniversary.
