The 2023 World Science Fiction Convention will be held at the Chengdu Science Fiction Pavilion. The 59,000 square meter venue under construction will serve as the main venue for the 81st annual World Science Fiction Convention and the Hugo Awards, and will also be home to a vibrant innovation center and “China’s leading science fiction writing incubator.” In fact, the city of Chengdu, with more than 20 million residents, is transforming into a globally important center for scientific innovation and research.

The Chengdu Science Fiction Pavilion has a high degree of flexibility and can be used to host a variety of exhibitions, conferences and events. Set in its natural and unique environment, the Science Fiction Pavilion is like “floating on the lake.” Its fluid design, developed through detailed digital modeling analysis, ensures efficiency in terms of functional composition, site conditions, solar radiation and structure, meeting the three-star standard of China’s Green Building Program.

Natural mixed ventilation, photovoltaic power generation devices embedded in the ceiling, and the design and size of the roof all contribute to the sustainable and efficient nature of the Science Fiction Pavilion. The Science Fiction Pavilion includes exhibition halls, theaters, conference halls, and supporting ancillary spaces, maximizing the venue’s flexibility and adaptability to host a variety of exhibitions, conferences, and events. Its light-filled atrium “Science Fiction Eye” skylight and its large windows facing the spectacular Xiling Mountains connect the interior to the surrounding environment.

The design of the main building integrates with the natural landscape of the lakeshore and is based on activity nodes connected by walking routes that extend from the city and adjacent subway stations to the surrounding parks and all the way to the center of the Science Fiction Pavilion, starting a journey of discovery through indoor and outdoor plazas, connecting the Science Fiction Pavilion’s exhibition halls, educational facilities, cafes, and other amenities. The Science Fiction Pavilion integrates the landscape with native plants to collect and store rainwater for natural filtration and reuse. A wetland will be rebuilt along the shore of Qingrong Lake, becoming an integral part of Chengdu’s sustainable drainage system, reducing flooding and increasing biodiversity throughout the city.

The Chengdu Science Fiction Pavilion will be open as the main venue for the Chengdu World Science Fiction Convention in 2023. Since June 2022, the project has advanced rapidly with the collaboration of all parties, and the structural topping-out ceremony was held on January 20.
