The 19th Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China in 2023. Hangzhou Asian Games Baseball and Softball Sports and Cultural Center is the largest new venue for this Asian Games. It is also the largest, highest standard and most advanced baseball and softball sports center in China. It will inject new vitality into the surrounding future communities and make sports the cultural background of the surrounding areas.
The total construction area of this project is about 136,000 square meters, divided into two plots, A and E. Plot A mainly builds the main and secondary baseball fields, physical training halls and supporting hotels; Plot E mainly builds the main and secondary softball fields. As a sports and cultural park open to the public, the venue has no walls as a whole. Whether it is the sports and cultural commercial street or the second-floor platform connecting various venues, citizens can enter at any time and experience it at zero distance.
The huge canopy above the venue is the key and difficult point of this design. It adopts a two-way truss structure system, with a maximum cantilever of 16 meters, supported by slender steel columns. The top surface is covered with a PTFE membrane with a titanium dioxide coating, with a total area of 21,000 square meters. Each unit is slightly raised in the middle, and from a distance it looks like ripples caused by the breeze blowing over the water, which is a metaphor for the regional characteristics of Shaoxing’s water town.
The bottom of the canopy is covered with curved white perforated aluminum plates, and the skylight diffuses into the venue through the canopy, creating a rich layer of light and shadow. The translucent visual effect can eliminate the sense of oppression brought by the huge volume, and the blurred boundary with the sky is more hazy and light. The slender white structural columns are like the skylight through the clouds, forming a sense of lightness and breathing. At night, under the rich LED lights, the canopy is bright and transparent, providing a unique viewing experience for the audience during the game.
From a distance, the entire canopy seems to float above the venue, and it looks like a white cloud wing, shading the entire venue. The project integrates it into the city from the perspective of the sports community, and builds it on the latitude and longitude of the city, community, and cultural factors. “Cloud Wings” quietly rests above the water village, anchoring the natural connection between the site and the city, eliminating the gap between the two, and giving rise to a vibrant sports community.
