The Panda New Shelter of Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base is located in the lush forests and bamboos in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, adjacent to Beihu Ecological Park and Chengdu Botanical Garden, and has a unique original ecological natural environment. Panda New Shelter is an expansion project within the Chengdu National Research and Breeding Base of Giant Pandas, covering an area of 12,809 square meters, covering a variety of complex functions such as animal behavior research, popular science education, and tourism viewing. Relying on the rolling hills in the site, the overall planning conforms to the local environment, integrating four geometric circular theme spaces between the valleys, and innovatively creating an interactive mode of harmonious coexistence between man and nature, and between architecture and environment.
Respecting the original landform environment is a key consideration in this case. The design team adopted an adaptive strategy that responds to climatic conditions. Initially, it started with the morphological orientation and arranged the form in accordance with the characteristics of the landform. Inspired by the natural environment of the Chengdu Plain, after a multi-dimensional study of the architectural form, volume and environmental elements, it was finally decided that the circle is the most adaptable theme language for flexible adjustment. The overall planning pattern follows a low-impact intervention strategy to minimize the erosion of the mountain and the impact on the environment. The new panda house covers multiple functions such as indoor display, panda animal house, logistics area and outdoor activity display area. The design is arranged around the theme elements, and four panda houses that integrate new functions such as animal research, popular science, and tourism viewing are surrounded by nature, organically penetrating the indoor and outdoor, blurring the sense of boundary between architecture and landscape. The new panda house organically integrates the architecture and landscape between the valleys and forests, and extends into a continuous land art landscape with the undulations of the terrain.
In the design of the exterior wall, locally manufactured wood grain grilles, aluminum and other sustainable building materials are used, combined with local construction technology to create a green and low-carbon building space throughout the life cycle. As an attempt at climate-adaptive architecture, the design adopts an innovative approach to the treatment of the building facade and roof. The non-enclosed space of the four venues accounts for 55%, which effectively reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions. This breathable building allows visitors to experience immersive interaction while deeply enjoying the natural scenery of the valley.
The design of the new panda house focuses on the relationship between architecture, landscape and environment, that is, the building itself can also become part of the landscape. They are the carriers of the connection between nature and environment. Its design process combines environmental friendliness with architectural sustainability, bringing a solution to adapt to the current environmental needs.
The new panda house is an interdisciplinary design practice that integrates architecture, landscape and land art. The architect uses the natural environment as a creative medium, making the building itself a public activity and space carrier that interacts with the natural landscape. The design of the new panda house will provide great help to promote the rejuvenation of the giant panda population and the breeding scientific research, and at the same time arouse more public attention to the protection of biodiversity represented by rare and endangered species such as giant pandas.
