The LightPRO Shell Pavilion uses a lightweight structure that is composed of a movable curved lattice frame made of natural fiber biocomposite profiles combined with a tensile membrane cloth. This forms a system of two hyperboloids that share a continuous beam. This beam consists of two connected profiles that transfer the forces of the two hyperboloids to three anchor points fixed to the skin.

The developed “bamboo-like” natural fiber-based biocomposite profiles are newly produced by extrusion technology. Extrusion technology is a continuous process for manufacturing fiber-reinforced polymers with constant cross-sections. In this project, natural flax and hemp fibers were used. The profiles are produced as hollow, 25 mm in diameter, 4 mm thick, and vary in length from 6.5 meters to 12.5 meters to accommodate the different spans required. The pavilion has a covered span of 10 meters and a maximum height of 4.8 meters around the perimeter.

The steel cables connect the profiles in the grid using traditional diagonal tying methods. The grid is connected to the profile of the beam through a customized connection system. The membrane is attached to three points in the ground and is tensioned along the perimeter using rope ties.

This innovative structure demonstrates a sustainable approach to future construction. The result is based on several years of research in the field of bio-based materials.
