PTFE membrane structure | A building with bones and skin

Industry News 2024-10-10

This is a corporate complex for the international fashion group Xinhe and its six sub-brands. The building is conceived as an ecosystem with skin and skeleton structure, exploring the interrelationship between inside and outside. As the largest fashion brand in Xiamen, Xinhe needs a flexible and efficient workspace to stimulate the creative process. Therefore, the design focuses more on innovative workplaces, eliminating barriers not only between departments but also between people and the surrounding environment.

The project covers an area of 15,000 square meters (about 161,500 square feet) and a total construction area of 61,000 square meters (about 656,600 square feet). It adopts a star-shaped layout, with six arms extending from the central atrium to six organic branches. The translucent PTFE film covers the exterior and keeps a certain distance from the building, which not only reduces the intensity of sunlight, but also provides ventilation for the building in hot seasons.

This light material makes the building look elegant and suspended, although it has a logical central skeleton structure inside. As the core of the public space, the atrium is marked by a lush garden and water feature. Each of the star-shaped arms is interwoven with living walls and gardens to form work areas, bringing natural energy into the workplace. Xiamen’s climate is subtropical, so the loose relationship of the outer layer to the inner structure also makes the building energy efficient.

The translucent PTFE mesh membrane covers the exterior at a slight distance and acts as a sunshade to ventilate the building during hot seasons. The lightness of the exterior gives the building an elegant and suspended appearance, despite its inner logic of a central skeleton structure.

As the core of the public space, the atrium is marked by lush gardens and water features. Its openness visually connects the different levels and promotes a flexible environment between different departments. The atrium is topped with an automated window to help air circulation. A pedestrian bridge spanning the atrium connects the different programs and also doubles as a catwalk for occasional fashion shows.

To reduce solar gain and provide natural lighting for the offices, the translucent membrane covering the building’s facade allows 40% light to pass through. At the same time, the void and elevated structure of the first floor creates a garden area with a water feature for public use. The atrium and the mesh membrane away from the building’s exterior walls also allow for ventilation through the building during the summer.
