Home / Steel structure | The steel roof of the permanent venue of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum was capped
On July 18, the construction project of the permanent venue of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum (public welfare part) ushered in the capping of the wave-shaped steel structure roof! It marks that this “science and technology ark” connecting China and the world is about to “raise the sail” and head for the ocean!
The project is located at the mouth of the Pearl River in China, with a total construction area of 93,500 square meters, a roof plane length of 170 meters, a width of 150 meters, and a building height of 50.9 meters. It is a two-way suspended triangular grid structure with a maximum span of 75 meters. The design of the two-way suspended triangle of its grid unit naturally suspends the grid under the action of gravity, making the thousands of tons of steel structure present a continuous wave-like light shape, restoring the design concept of “thousands of sails competing, science and technology sailing”, which is not only full of dynamic beauty, but also reflects the challenge and innovation of architectural design and construction.
The complex shape of the special-shaped curved surface and the installation accuracy within 3 mm have greatly increased the difficulty of deepening the design, processing and production and on-site construction. In order to ensure the overall safety and stability of the project and restore the technological sense of the design concept, the facade steel structure adopts a single-layer grid structure with intersecting circular tubes with special-shaped curved surfaces, and the roof steel structure adopts a two-way suspended triangular grid. The total steel consumption is about 7,000 tons, overcoming many difficulties such as complex positioning and different directions of the normal lines of the rods, a large number of cross-section types and specifications, two-way curved H-shaped and box-shaped steel beams, a large number of node specifications and quantities, and a large number of different shapes of cast steel parts. Combining strength with lightness, the horizontal and vertical steel is transformed into a “technological ark” sailing in the Greater Bay Area.
The capping of the wave-shaped steel structure roof not only laid a solid foundation for the subsequent construction of the project, but also provided a strong guarantee for the early completion and commissioning of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum. In the future, this project will become a bright business card of the Greater Bay Area and inject new impetus into the prosperity and development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Adhering to the design concept of “thousands of sails competing, science and technology sailing”, the project is carved into several rhythmic sails and waves metaphorical shapes. The undulating roof shape creates a unique sense of waves. The sail-shaped perforated aluminum panel units on the facade enclose a flexible and transparent semi-outdoor space, which integrates the spectacular landscape of rapid river and undulating greenery, symbolizing the striving spirit of China’s scientific development in the new era. It also reveals the local features of Nansha and composes Nansha’s innovative determination to forge ahead in the rapids.
