Structural classification of tensioned membrane

Industry News 2024-2-19

Tensioned membrane structures, as a perfect combination of modern architectural art and technology, have gradually emerged in the architectural field with their unique shapes, lightweight forms, and excellent functional characteristics. Depending on structural features and application methods, tensioned membrane structures can be roughly divided into three forms: frame-supported, tensioned, and inflatable. Each form has its own unique charm and application advantages.

Frame-Supported Membrane Structure

The frame-supported membrane structure, as the name suggests, is formed by covering a robust frame with tensioned membrane material. This structural form is commonly seen in large-scale sports venues, exhibition centers, and other buildings. The frame-supported membrane structure is characterized by its good stability, high load-bearing capacity, and the lightweight and transparency of the membrane material, which bring more visual impact to the building. For example, the main stadium of the Beijing Olympics, known as the “Bird’s Nest,” adopted this structural form, showcasing the modern beauty of Chinese architecture.

Tensioned Membrane Structure

The tensioned membrane structure mainly relies on tension cables and compression bars as the main load-bearing components, forming a self-balancing system through prestressed tension. It lacks a traditional rigid frame and achieves stability solely through the tension of the membrane material itself, as well as the support of prestressed cables and compression bars. This structural form, due to its unique shape and lightweight body, is often used in landscape architecture, park ornaments, and other occasions. The tensioned membrane structure is not only aesthetically pleasing but also integrates well into the natural environment, adding a touch of brightness to urban landscapes.

Inflatable Membrane Structure

The inflatable membrane structure is a type of architectural form that achieves stability by inflating air or other gases into the membrane, causing it to generate a certain prestress. This structural form is commonly seen in large-scale temporary buildings, exhibition tents, and other occasions. The inflatable membrane structure is characterized by rapid construction, convenient disassembly, and low cost. It also has excellent thermal insulation effects. It can quickly construct a fully functional building space in a short period of time, meeting various temporary or emergency needs.

Whether it’s frame-supported, tensioned, or inflatable membrane structures, tensioned membrane structures bring more possibilities and innovation to modern architecture with their unique shapes and excellent functional characteristics. With the continuous advancement of technology and people’s increasing pursuit of architectural aesthetics, tensioned membrane structures will undoubtedly play an even more important role in the future of architecture, creating more beautiful, green, and sustainable architectural landscapes for us.
