What membrane materials are commonly used in membrane structure buildings? Many people may not be familiar with membrane structure architecture, and they naturally lack some understanding of membrane structure materials.

Membrane material is a type of thin film material with high strength and good flexibility. Membrane material is lightweight, flexible, durable, fireproof, has good transparency, and is not easily contaminated. Commonly used membrane materials include PVDF, PTFE, ETFE, and other varieties, which are materials used in modern membrane structures. Both are woven from high-strength fibers into a fabric as the substrate, which is divided into polyester fibers and glass fibers, and then coated with resin coating on both sides of the substrate. The resin used for the coating is a thin film formed by the resin of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), silicone, and polytetrafluoroethylene copolymer, which does not require fibers as the substrate. This film material is the thinnest and most transparent.

The characteristics of PVC film materials:

Compared to PTFE, PVC film has some differences in strength and fire resistance, but its price is much lower. Moreover, the service life of PVC film is generally 7 to 15 years, making it the most widely used membrane structure material at present.

Characteristics of PTFE film material:

  1. High strength, good durability, good fire resistance, strong self-cleaning, and not affected by ultraviolet light.
  2. It has high transparency and the light passing through the membrane material is naturally lax, without generating shadows or glare.
  3. The reflectivity of solar energy is high, so the heat absorption is very small. Even under the exposure of summer sunlight, the membrane structure of the car shed will not be greatly affected.

Characteristics of ETFE membrane material:

  1. Wear resistance, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, insulation, high safety materials, thin and light film materials, and other characteristics.
  2. Good durability: Climate adaptation: -200~150 degrees Celsius, harsh climate for more than 15 years, with unchanged mechanical and optical functions.
  3. High tensile strength: the elongation at break reaches over 300%. High safety: Good flame retardancy, shrinkage after melting but no dripping. Excellent self-cleaning function, dust and stains can be removed by rainwater washing.
